If you are reading this, thanks already.
If you have, or if you ever, decide to hire me as a coach, you’ll find that I tend to ask questions unrelated to what you eat and how you currently move your body to gain a better perspective on approaches that may work best for you. A “nutrition coach” dabbling into your personal life and dreams? You better believe it.
With each new client I pose the question “So, what is your thing?” I follow this up with- “You know, what is it that sets your soul on fire?” “What is it that you’re good at that other people may struggle with?” “What is something your peers find hard but you find easy?” “What could you get up in the morning and do everyday and be happy?”
Basically put,
“What is your passion?”
Now, I’m telling ya, even with my multiple prompts, this question STUMPS people. Hard. They look at me with BIG eyes as if I just required them to reach into the depths of their soul and spill it on my desk.
This question tends to bring emotion to our conversation and it allows me to dive deeper into what drives my client and what types of tools might be required down the road to pull them from a slump. Let’s be real here: you can provide someone the best nutrition and training plan in the world but if they’re not feeling fulfilled, driven or excited about life, my job is not done.
I have received from many individuals the response, “I wish my passion was fitness like it is yours, but it’s just not”.
Well, sorry to burst your bubble but mine ain’t “fitness” either. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE fitness, but my TRUE passion extends FAR beyond the gym doors and FAR past the kitchen. My TRUE passion can be summed up as “personal development” and that shit is MUCH more inclusive to who I am than lifting weights and eating salads.
A good self-help book, a solid Ted-Talk, a motivational compilation YouTube, a journaling exercise, a hot coffee in silent reflection, a podcast filled with “AH-HA” moments – now THAT’S the shit I love.
